After 14 years of Undercover recovery successes, we need to inform you that we'll no longer be developing or supporting Undercover.

All Undercover support will stop on Jan. 1st 2020.

On the same date, the undercoverhq.com website and the Undercover recovery service will stop operations as well.Undercover uninstall instructions can be found below in this blog post.
If you want to continue protecting your Mac, we recommend switching to HiddenApp.

Established in 2010, HiddenApp has been recovering thousands of Macs, iPads and iPhones. Hidden not only offers a solution for protecting macOS devices but also has an offering for iOS, which means you can protect your entire suite of Apple devices with one solution. HiddenApp is fully road-tested and ready for the imminent release of macOS Catalina and also has a brand new iOS app that will be released in the coming weeks.

We have negotiated a 20% discount on all Hidden orders with the following coupon code: UNDERCOVER20

Why are we halting Undercover development

The main reason is that over the past 6 years, Apple has significantly increased security on macOS. While that’s a good thing in general, it makes it increasingly more difficult to reliably run hidden software like Undercover.

Another key point is that FileVault has become mainstream. This means that a thief won’t be able to access your files without your password - again a good thing. However, this also means that Undercover won’t be able to function properly, as third party developers don’t have access to the recovery partition that is being used when a thief boots your Mac without knowing your password. Only Apple has access to this recovery partition, where it can run FindMyMac.
Undercover (or any other third party application) can’t run on this recovery partition and will be useless if FileVault has been enabled.

A third reason is that with macOS Catalina, Apple is refreshing its FindMyMac app (now called FindMy) and will leverage its large installed base of Macs and iPhones to track stolen devices, even if they never connect to the internet. They do so by using Bluetooth connections of nearby devices that are connected to the internet. Again a great idea from Apple, but Undercover or any other third party application, do not have access to this functionality.

When launched in January 2006, Undercover was groundbreaking software. The fact that Apple has replicated Undercover-like functionality and embedded it deep into iOS and macOS shows the value of the theft-recovery genre that Undercover has pioneered. At this point, however, we feel that we can no longer deliver reliable software due to security restrictions, while having a hard time carving out a successful business model competing with free Apple software that is installed by default on every Mac and has access to system features that we can only dream of.

We're proud of the literally thousands of stolen Macs that have been recovered thanks to Undercover. We're also proud of the fact that Undercover helped bringing a little bit of justice in a world that's often unfair. Undercover even provided critical evidence to arrest a drug gang.

We would like to thank you, as a user, for your continued support over the past 14 years. It has been a great journey!
Uninstalling Undercover

You can only uninstall Undercover if you are an administrator of your Mac.
But what about the other scenarios? Is your data protected while you go online? If you are wondering how you can improve your Mac's security, the lovely folks at BestVPN have made a very good overview of all the things you can do to keep your Mac and data safe:

If you have upgraded to macOS High Sierra, you may have noticed that this transition did not go very smoothly. Apple’s newest operating system suffers from security flaws and vulnerabilities, and developers of third-party apps are having trouble getting their software to run bug-free, including established brands like Adobe. They are still discouraging their users from upgrading to macOS 10.13, as they are experiencing compatibility problems with apps like Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, and "working hard to resolve these issues in a forthcoming release."
Unfortunately, Undercover is affected as well - we saw issues with location tracking and with the registration procedure emerge with our app on High Sierra.
So instead of releasing a slightly modified Undercover version for High Sierra, we have decided to rewrite significant parts of Undercover. This, of course, takes a bit more time, but we estimate that we'll have a brand new version of Undercover ready early next month.

Thank you so much for your patience and understanding. Please let us know at support@orbicule.com if you are also seeing problems with Undercover on High Sierra, so we can help you with a temporary solution until the new version is available!

We’re happy to announce that Undercover is ready for macOS Sierra!
With version 6.5 of Undercover already installed on your Mac, there is nothing you should do: this version fully compliant with the new macOS Sierra.
You can see which version is running on your Mac in the Info tab in your account at undercoverHQ.com. If it’s not the latest version, you will find a download link there, or you can download Undercover directly from here.

After upgrading macOS, you can verify that Undercover is still working in your account at undercoverHQ.com:

If Undercover is able to contact our servers, you should see a recent location under "Status" in the Info screen in your account ("Located ... ago").

If you don’t see a recent location there, make sure that Undercover is still allowed to obtain a location in the Location Services preferences on your Mac:

Open System Preferences

Go to the Security & Privacy panel

Go to the Privacy tab

Select Location Services

Grant access to "uc"

Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions, we’re here to help!

If you are ready for El Capitan, so are we! Undercover 6.5 fully supports the latest version of Mac OS X. You can find the new version ready for download in your account at undercoverHQ.com, or right here.

The new Undercover comes with a completely retinafied Undercover HQ. Granted, this will not help you recover your Mac any faster, but it may ease the pain a bit to do so in @2x resolution.

In this version we have also improved the location tracking, for which Undercover now fully relies on Apple’s Location Services.

After upgrading OS X, if Gatekeeper alerts you that Undercover has been placed in quarantine, it’s best to simply download and install the latest version again. Don’t worry: this does not mean that Undercover is not compatible with El Capitan.

Enjoy the view! ;)
I opened our mailbox this weekend to find this email. Thought I'd share it with you:

Dear Orbicule,
Thank you for your amazing software!
Although at this point in time, my stolen Mac has yet to be found, your stellar product has recently significantly contributed to the capturing and jailing of a wanted criminal.
If only Orbicule and/or the police were to somehow still find my laptop, I would have an even-better customer testimonial success story to tell. =P
Regardless, below are a few URLs related to this case.
Your collective hard work, excellent software product development team, and professional crew over at Orbicule definitely get my praise and support! :)
Goodmorning, blog readers!

We have 2 excellent Undercover reviews for you today: Polish friends, head over to applecafe.pl (review in Polish, evidently). And Yasin Soliman has made an extensive
evaluation of all Undercover functionality. Couldn’t agree more with his conclusion:
Undercover 6 does it for you!
Imagine for 5 seconds what you would do if your Mac gets stolen...

We bet reporting the theft on UndercoverHQ.com didn’t cross your mind. That’s a shame, because the first few hours after the theft can be quite crucial when it comes to gathering evidence. That’s why we introduce Undercover 6, featuring Undercover Watch. Undercover Watch monitors your Mac and starts collecting evidence as soon as it detects your Mac is out-of-place, even if you haven’t realized it yet.

Undercover Watch can monitor your Mac and activate the recovery procedure when your Mac connects from a network away from your home or work place.
In addition, we’ve always encouraged you to set up dummy or guest accounts for thiefs to use. Now Undercover can activate automatically when a thief uses that account.

Undercover 6 is more than just a software update. It also comes with a major upgrade to our recovery center. We’ve always made a point of having the best theft recovery service available. Now we’re taking this to the next level. From today on, we actively follow up on theft reports. When you report a theft, someone of our theft recovery center will personally get in touch with you.

If you already use Undercover 5, then Undercover 6 is a free upgrade for you! If you have Undercover 5.6, you will receive the update automatically. Future updates will install automatically and in the background. Even when your Mac is stolen you can enjoy the latest features!

Undercover now also collects wireless connection information. You'll now know the name and hardware address of each wireless network a thief connects to. This information is often requested by law enforcement officers because it eliminates the need to get a court order to have the ISP release the street address. Now they can just scan the neighborhood with their smartphone to find the access point and its owner!

Undercover 5.6 also improves the accuracy of the GPS fixes. Until now, we used Skyhook Wireless to get the coordinates of a Mac. Apple's Location Services worked fine but were too easy to disable by thiefs. In Mavericks, you again need a administrator password to do this. That's why we now use both frameworks to obtain the most accurate location information available.

You can download and install the update from https://undercoverhq.com/download!

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18997313.post-31529534317617179092013-10-01T18:33:00.001+02:002013-10-01T18:33:10.093+02:00Undercover meets Mavericks

Today we released Undercover 5.5, a free upgrade that also works on Apple's soon-to-be-released OS X Mavericks. We encourage you to upgrade asap to guarantee that your Mac remains protected. You can grab Undercover 5.5 from https://undercoverhq.com/download.
Previous versions of Undercover are incompatible with OS X Mavericks and are therefore unable to recover your Mac in case it gets stolen.

Undercover Debriefings

With Undercover 5.5, we also introduce Undercover Debriefings. These are monthly notifications about your Mac's Undercover status, including tips on how to improve recovery chances.
Expect your first notification to arrive later this month!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18997313.post-66483666179351143562013-06-19T17:34:00.002+02:002013-06-19T17:34:31.073+02:00Looking for guidance

We strive towards making our software straightforward and easy to install (and hopefully it is!), but sometimes you just want to have a manual at hand to make sure your theft-recovery system or your home alarm is set up right and you have everything covered.

To learn more about how you can get the most out of your Undercover installation, you can download a PDF with all the instructions here: www.orbicule.com/undercover/mac/UndercoverGuide.pdf

As of today, we also have a user guide for Witness available. Get it while it’s hot! www.orbicule.com/witness/WitnessUserGuide.pdf

Winnie Trekkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11931536047890155184noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18997313.post-38292361809456990262013-06-04T18:41:00.001+02:002013-10-07T14:37:17.883+02:00Even more recovery storiesIt seems like Undercover keeps impressing the police, and they sure did an excellent job finding these three user's Macs.
A lot of users are asking about the possibility of setting up a schedule for Witness, auto-arming the alarm at specific times every day. We have not yet implemented such a feature, as we feel this would make the app much more complex, but there is a solution for those in desperate need of a schedule. All you'll need is Calendar, and a script to tell Witness to activate the alarm.

Step 1: the script

You can activate Witness with AppleScript using the following command:

tell application "WitnessUserAgent" to activate

This will activate the alarm on all your Macs (but not on those that have been excluded). To deactivate, you can replace "activate" with "deactivate".

You can download these simple scripts here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/19163287/
witness/AppleScript%20samples/DeActivate.zip

Step 2: Calendar

Unfortunately, Apple has removed the ability to run a script from Calendar in Mountain Lion, but there is a workaround: you can save the script as an Application, and then choose “Open File” as the alert option when you create an event in Calendar.

Choose “Other” to select the Application file you want to open.

Do you have a stay-at-home Mac, but a stay-at-home pet as well? If you’re less interested in knowing what your cat is doing during the day, you can set up Witness so it will only trigger the alarm when the camera sees a (human) face. That way you’ll only get alerted when there really is something up.

Go to the Witness Preferences on your Mac (under System Preferences, or via the Witness menu item), and choose the Cameras tab.

At the bottom of this pane, select the option to "Alert me: Only when a face is detected"

Et voila: no more false alerts from Fido!

This option may also come in handy when you have your camera pointed at a moving object, like a ceiling fan or a window with a tree behind it.

Winnie Trekkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11931536047890155184noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18997313.post-40046072566251327832013-05-02T11:04:00.003+02:002013-05-02T15:13:35.433+02:009 tips for traveling with technology

Apart from using Undercover, how do you keep your Mac and data safe when you’re on the road? Here is some useful advice:

Avoid using computer bags that look like computer bags. I use a regular backpack to tag my Mac along.

Save stuff online. iCloud, Dropbox and other web-based services are your friend here. Not only can you use them to access your data anywhere, they provide a place to keep your files out of reach in case your Mac gets stolen.

Use strong passwords, certainly don’t keep them in the same bag as your Mac.

Encrypt your sensitive data. Undercover (or other theft-recovery software) is unfortunately not compatible with full-disk encryption, but there are other solutions to keep your (business’) info secure. (Like Knox, for example.)

If you don’t need that level of security, do take the effort to set up a password for your account. Automatic login may be convenient, but can the thought of a stranger going through your personal files perhaps change your mind about that?

When you have a theft-recovery application like Undercover installed, you’ll want the thief to be able to go online so the software can gather as much tracking information as possible. Create a separate (honeypot) account without a password. This dummy account will provide the thief an easy way to use your Mac, without access to your personal files.

Set a screensaver password. Also a bit less convenient, but it will be a comfort to know the thief (or any other creep) can not access the account that you left open while you go to the bathroom at Starbucks.

Enable the Apple Firmware Password. It will prevent anyone who doesn’t know this password from wiping or replacing your HD.

Keep an eye on your Mac and keep it as close to you as possible at all times. Take it with you as carry-on luggage when you’re flying. I also always store my backpack under the seat in front of me, and not in the overhead compartments. (I’m tiny, so I usually don’t have any problems with my designated leg room on the airplane. :))

Witness’ first priority is to alert you when there’s an intruder in your home, and while its setup is simple and it's easy to use, perhaps you still find that something is missing?

With AppleScript it's possible to add an extra bit of functionality to your alarm system, and to make that even easier, we have included a few sample scripts below. You can add these scripts to Witness in the “Actions” tab in the Witness preferences on your Mac (under System Preferences).

Do you already have a great Witness and AppleScript combo set up? Don’t hesitate to share it in the comments!

For those who are just getting started with AppleScript, you’ll find a beginners guide here: http://mac.tutsplus.com/tutorials/automation/the-ultimate-beginners-guide-to-applescript-2/

A script that will play a warning sound (wailing alarm).
This script is ready to use, but you can also adjust it so it plays one of the other sound clips (a barking dog, or how about the one Kevin used in Home Alone?). Or you can use your own sound file. Just make sure the file is in the same folder as the script, and that you replace the name of the file in the script itself, using the AppleScript Editor.

Many times, significant location changes simply do not trigger Undercover. We also tested other theft-protection iOS apps and these tests clearly confirm the issue. In most cases, these apps simply don't phone home. As a result, we don't see how we can develop an iOS app that meets our high standards in theft recovery.

Given the fact that Apple does not give us access to the same system features for location tracking and device locking as they are using for Find My iPhone, and because Apple is giving away Find My iPhone for free with iCloud, we decided it makes more sense to focus all our development efforts on Undercover for Mac.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com17tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18997313.post-24369628222067053642012-08-07T10:16:00.000+02:002012-12-14T10:18:01.722+01:00Undercover 5 is here
It's great to introduce Undercover 5, the long awaited new version of our theft recovery app. Undercover 5 now adds key logging, as well as the ability to snap photos, screenshots or location data in real-time. In addition, we have completely rewritten the Undercover web interface: it's now easier than ever to manage all your Macs.

Because Undercover 5 is such a big upgrade from version 4, we have given it a new virtual home: http://www.undercoverhq.com. With this new home comes a new account system, so your Undercover 4 credentials won't work with http://www.undercoverhq.com. If you are still on Undercover 4 (or earlier), please contact support@orbicule.com. We'll send you a coupon code to purchase Undercover 5 for free if you have bought after September 23 2010, or for just $19 if you purchased Undercover before that date.

Undercover 4 and the http://undercovercenter.com web app will continue to work until the end of 2013. We highly recommend all our users to switch to Undercover 5 as soon as possible.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18997313.post-73917809919226358922012-07-19T17:23:00.001+02:002012-07-19T17:24:16.358+02:00Undercover on Mountain Lion
In our New Year's resolutions blog post, we promised to release Undercover 5 in the first half of this year. Obviously we did not meet that deadline. The reason for this delay is quite simple: we added much more functionality and polish to Undercover 5 than we could have anticipated in January. The delay won't last too much longer, however, as we are planning to release Undercover 5 in August. It will be the biggest upgrade yet, giving our competitors a lot more stuff to copy.

In the meantime, Mountain Lion is just around the corner and as with every previous OS X release, we want to be ready on day 1. That's why we released an intermediate 4.8 update that is fully compatible with Mountain Lion. Of course, it also runs on Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion. We had to drop Tiger support for 4.8, but Undercover 4.7.1 is still compatible with Tiger.

You may download Undercover 4.8 on the Undercover Mac home page. For Tiger users, Undercover 4.7.1 is available here.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com16tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18997313.post-43276862376238717162012-01-31T22:30:00.000+01:002012-02-01T11:14:29.434+01:00Witness 2 is hereWe are proud to introduce Witness 2, a major upgrade to our home alarm system for Mac and iOS. Based on feedback we received from our users, version 2 has the following new features:

Sneak Peek: watch live images from any active Mac in your alarm system.

Auto-activation: Witness uses the location of your iOS device to automatically arm the alarm when leaving your house, and disarm it upon your return. It's magic!

Face detection: you can now setup Witness to only detect motion if it detects a human face. This may come in handy when you have pets running around the house.

Motion detection sensitivity: optimize camera settings for a specific environment.

Multiple cameras: connect and use up to 3 cameras per Mac, making it easier to cover larger areas.

Applescript support: it's now possible to have AppleScripts executed when arming and disarming the alarm, or when motion is detected.

We have some awesome stuff in store for you in 2012. First and foremost, we will unveil Undercover 5. This is not just an upgrade: it's a complete rewrite of our critically acclaimed theft-recovery software. We have taken everything we have learned from 6 years of theft-recovery experience and started from scratch with a brand new system. No single line of code from version 4 remains untouched - literally! Undercover 5 will set a new bar for theft-recovery software. In addition, it will add exciting new features, and it will be even easier to set up. We are well on track to release Undercover 5 in the first half of this year.

Undercover 5 is not the only project we are working on, however. Since the launch of Witness in March 2011, thousands of Mac user have chosen to protect their homes, businesses or dorm rooms with a Witness alarm system. Not without success: Witness already assisted in catching a hospital thief in Virginia, US: http://www.orbicule.com/witness/success

As I'm writing this, we are putting the finishing touches on Witness 2, a major upgrade to our Mac-based home alarm system. Based on the feedback you have sent us, we have added the following features to Witness 2:

As you can see, Witness 2 is a landmark upgrade. It will be released later this month and best of all it will be free for all registered Witness users. It's our way to say thank you to our early adopters.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18997313.post-11308771087934927562011-11-22T18:01:00.001+01:002011-11-22T21:43:08.707+01:00We love you, Steve!A lot has been written about Steve's life and death over the past six weeks, and rightly so. His vision and clear thinking have guided thousands of people and companies across the globe. Orbicule is definitely one of them. 'No respect for the status quo', our company's tagline, has literally been 'taken' from the Think Different campaign Steve launched upon his return to Apple in 1997.

It's not just about slogans though, we try to let the Steve-mindset and attention to detail permeate everything we do. It's even safe to say that without Steve, Orbicule would not even exist. That's quite an accomplishment for someone we never met in person. Fortunately we were lucky enough to attend and enjoy many of his Stevenotes, being in the same room with the reality distortion field.

Needless to say, we were deeply saddened when we learned about Steve's passing and we felt we should do something to remember him. Just hours after the news broke, the Belgian national television asked us to participate in a short movie to remember and honor Steve. Of course, we accepted immediately.

As a tribute to Steve, we are posting the resulting movie below. Part of it was filmed at Orbicule, and you might recognize the entire Orbicule team in the final shot.

It's our way to say: "thank you Steve, we love you!'.
Thanks to Undercover, the Henderson (NV) police was able to recover the stolen MacBook and - probably equally important - roughly 1500 photos taken during a three week road-trip through California and Nevada.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0
