Undercover recovers stolen MacBook Pro

Since the launch of Undercover, hundreds of Mac users have emailed us, asking for some real-world recovery stories. Thus far, we posted one - very unusual - recovery story on this blog. Does this mean that Undercover is not effective in recovering stolen Macs? Not at all.

As outlined before, the problem with recovery stories is that they could violate the privacy of the victims and of the thief. The last thing we want is to give the thief a chance to sue the victim or us for violating his/her privacy. This might sound crazy, but it's a real concern....

That being said, I would like to share another recovery story without violating the privacy of the victim or thief, while still giving enough details to keep the story interesting. Since I thought this story would not only be of interest to the readers of this blog, but to all (prospective) Undercover users, I created a new section on the Undercover website. Enjoy our 2nd recovery story.

That was an interesting read, and satisfied a kind of morbid curiosity !

Now that I know the software does the job, I don't think it's such a good idea to shout about it - I wouldn't want the thieves to be too wary of using my stolen laptop on the internet, after all !

I am still curious to hear of cases where the screen dimming feature has resulted in 'faulty' laptops finding their way to service centres though.

Okay. You are only posting two actual case studies... ostensibly because somehow you would "have" to somehow compromise privacy in order to recount them well enough to be worthwhile.

I'm sorry, but I just don't grasp how a moderately privacy obscured depiction of events is a problem - either for those involved or for us just reasonably wanting to see some manifest successful action of your product and it's promoted premise.

After all, while your money back guarantee for the nominal price of your product if my MacBook is stolen and your product turns out to be useless for recoverying it is well and fine enough, it's FAR from protecting or reimbursing the actual loss. Which is the ONLY reason to get your program.

I can't see any reason at all why you wouldn't be able to at least tell us how many successful cases there have been to date, due to your software. Why aren't you already tallying and reporting this?

what's keeping a thief from taping the isight camera? also, what about organized crime? the thief could be one person, then the disk could be reformatted using os 9, right?

i really want to buy this, but only if i know it's really secure.

I've been waiting for an email answering some question from these guys for over 2 weeks now and have not heard a word back. Is this the kind of responsiveness I'll get when my MacBook is stolen?

We never wait two weeks before answering an email, so please resend the email. Thanks!
