In our New Year's resolutions blog post, we promised to release Undercover 5 in the first half of this year. Obviously we did not meet that deadline. The reason for this delay is quite simple: we added much more functionality and polish to Undercover 5 than we could have anticipated in January. The delay won't last too much longer, however, as we are planning to release Undercover 5 in August. It will be the biggest upgrade yet, giving our competitors a lot more stuff to copy.
In the meantime, Mountain Lion is just around the corner and as with every previous OS X release, we want to be ready on day 1. That's why we released an intermediate 4.8 update that is fully compatible with Mountain Lion. Of course, it also runs on Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion. We had to drop Tiger support for 4.8, but Undercover 4.7.1 is still compatible with Tiger.

Will the upgrade from version 4.8 to 5 be free? I was planning on purchasing the software but if a new (paid) version will be available next month I may just wait for it to be released instead. Thank you!
There is no need to wait. The upgrade will be free for everyone who purchased Undercover 4.

I will say up front that I did not read the instructions... BUT I just tried to download and install 4.8 AFTER I installed Mountain Lion... but I get the message:

What's the deal with installing Undercover 4.8 on Mountain Lion?
Default system settings cause the install to fail with the alert:
"uc.pkg" can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer.
Isn't orbicule an "identified developer"??

Why do I see under Security & Privacy in system preferences after upgrading to Mountain Lion I need to authorize Location Services to approve location for BOTH a "uclocator" with the "exec" icon and a "uclocator.app"? Why are there two, which should I authorize, is this an error? Not sure what's going on with this but I know it has something to do with your software.
@Unknown: make sure to download and install Undercover 4.8, that version no longer uses uclocator.
Before installing, it's best to remove it manually. In the Terminal, enter the following command:
sudo rm -rf /usr/bin/uc/
Enter your admin password when prompted.
Hi thank you for all you do! If I may ask: Your comments above stated the upgrade from 4 to 5 would be a free upgrade, but it looks like the site refers to this being a paid upgrade. How does the paid upgrade work with a family license? I do not believe we have received an update e-mail yet with any type of code.

It looks like Apple have removed Undercover 5 from the app store. :-(
We removed Undercover iOS from the App Store, as we can no longer develop it according to our standards. Apple does not provide us with enough API access to develop an efficient theft-recovery app on iOS. We'll invest all our resources in our Mac app.
